GAPS Chocolate Coins aka Hanukkah Gelt

Making your own chocolate coins at home is easier than you may think. All you need is some silicone chocolate molds, cocoa powder, cacao butter, and a few other ingredients – and you’re ready to get started.

To begin, melt your favorite type of cocoa butter in a bowl over a pot of boiling water. My first tip is to use a measuring cup inside your double boiler so that you can easily measure out the correct amount of cocoa butter pieces.

Once the cocoa butter is melted, stir in the other ingredients and then pour it into your chocolate molds and let it cool and harden.

My second tip, is if you don’t have a chocolate mold, you can also use silicone muffin liners instead, just pour a tiny bit of chocolate to coat the bottom.

When your coins have cooled off, pop them out of the molds, and it’s time to package them up! You can wrap them up with this gold foil, so they look like authentic Hanukkah gelt.

When your Hanukkah chocolate coins are ready, place them in a festive bowl or create unique packaging with bags and colorful ribbon. You can also add a personalized touch by attaching a handwritten label with the name of the recipient.

Why Make Homemade Chocolate Coins

1. Healthier Chocolate Coins

As I alluded to in the introduction, most gelt that you buy in the store, is mostly not chocolate! The first ingredient is usually sugar! Hello, inflammation!

And in addition to cocoa butter and powder, the concoction includes: soy lecithin (an emulsifier you should always avoid), artificial vanilla flavor or vanillin (same story), powdered milk (a processed food to avoid, made from non-organic milk, no thank you).

I have yet to find a chocolate coin that is made with only whole food ingredients, and definitely have not seen any sweetened with honey. But if any of my readers do find one, will you please leave a comment? I would love a strore-bought option to recommend!

2. Fun Activity with Kids

Making chocolate coins at home, is a wonderful activity for kids! While you may need to be in charge of melting the cacao butter, once the mixture is prepared, it is not too hot and they are able to help with pour.

The littlest ones, are best as helpers for popping the chocolate out of the molds and wrapping them up! We have done this as an activity several times and I always have lots of litte helpers and volunteers, especially when little fingers meet melted chocolate: a match made in heaven.

GAPS Diet Chocolate Coins- are they even allowed?

Hanukkah can be a challenging holiday if you’re new to the GAPS diet, but GAPS legal recipes don’t have to be! As with all holidays, try to find substitutions for your favorite holiday meals and focus the festivities on non-food activities.

Chocolate, in general, is not a recommended food on the GAPS diet. However, when you have been following a GAPS or Paleo diet for a while, and have no digestive symptoms, then a small amount of cocoa can be enjoyed as a treat! Technically, chocolate will fall in the “advanced full GAPS” category.
